A Note From Dorothy Zimmerman...
Hello, Sunrise Rotarians,
Thank you all for the beautiful arrangement of fresh flowers you recently sent, and all the well wishes as I continue to navigate these recent weeks of medical adventure. As some of you may know, I underwent surgery at North Florida in early June for a rather rapid onset of abdominal pain. While I had hoped it might be appendicitis, surgeons found and removed a malignant mass from my ovary (my appendix is just fine!). They removed surrounding tissues as well to test whether the cancer cells had spread. I am happy to report that the cancer has not spread. I've mostly recovered from the surgery now, and even returned to work. According to my doctors, I have every reason to expect to make a full recovery.
This week, however, I must begin a regimen of chemotherapy at Shands 'just in case' there are isolated cancer cells thinking of setting up shop somewhere else. Unfortunately, my treatments are scheduled on Thursdays, and will last all day, from 7:30 am to 6-ish, so I'll miss Rotary meetings. There are six treatments scheduled, three weeks apart, ending Nov. 4. I'm supposed to use the intervals to recuperate and recharge -- the oncology doctors tell me it's important to keep up regular routines and live life as normally as possible, which I'm trying to do. So I may get to meet with you during the off weeks. I'm mindful that I'll be considered immunocompromised and more susceptible to contracting the resurging COVID virus. I certainly don't want to infect the other patients taking chemo with me, so I may have to stay away from any large gatherings.
I sure have missed my Rotary routine. I'm heartened that things seem to be getting back to normal. I owe all who have stepped in to cover the newsletter a huge thanks. I also deeply appreciate those who have reached out to offer meals and assistance. I'm doing well for now and look forward to being back with you when I'm a hundred percent.
Dorothy Z.

Your Rotary Minute: Let's Each One Bring One

Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta has an initiative he hopes will increase Rotary’s membership worldwide. He's asking each member to bring a non-Rotarian or previous Rotarian to a Rotary meeting, service project, or social event.

The objective is to expose more people to Rotary. We may not always get a member out of this initiative, but more people will learn about what we do, and that’s always a positive thing.

This year, let’s each one bring one. Rotary is too awesome to keep to ourselves.

Have a great Rotary week, everyone!

Service Above Self,
District Governor 2021-2022
